We started “The Book of I am…” in 1995 by accident – doesn't that seem to be the case for most things? John wrote a poem for a friend's birthday about what it was like to be a bird and it ended with the line "I am the Pelican". We loved it! We decided to write more stories about other things you might see during the day…or night, but not really think about them too much – with each reflecting the beauty of nature and our surroundings. However, we didn't want it be about what we saw – we thought it would be more interesting to have it be seen by someone else...or by something else.
And this is where our alter egos were born, Karl Bugg and Johnny Grasshopper. They are two insect friends that live outside and look at life all around them during their daily adventures. The game they play is observing things that one of them sees and then tell it to the other as a poetic riddle – then take their guess after the last rhyme. We thought it gave children a way to see things differently, to use their imagination and to think about these things they are around all of the time.
The poems have a snappy cadence, which makes them fun to read out loud. That, along with the way the insect characters bring out the beauty of the answers in the final illustrations, will hopefully allow parents and children to remember some of the riddle lines for years to come!
Follow Johnny Grasshopper and Karl Bugg in their adventures as they give you hints about what they see along the way! New poetic riddles as well as introducing two new insect friends will be coming soon!
